Let’s face it – your driveway takes an absolute battering. Day in, day out, it’s carrying the weight of your family cars, delivery vans (how many parcels did you order this week?), and perhaps even the occasional caravan or work vehicle. All this traffic means your driveway needs to be up to scratch if you want to avoid that dreaded cracking, sinking or general wear that makes your property look a bit, well… neglected.
At L Groundworks, we’ve seen it all when it comes to driveway disasters. But we’ve also installed countless driveways that stand the test of time, looking smart decades after installation. So what’s the secret sauce? Let’s dive in.
Pick the Right Materials for the Job
First things first – you need to choose materials that can handle whatever you’re planning to throw at them.
Concrete – The sturdy workhorse of driveway materials. It’s incredibly strong and can last 30+ years when properly installed. Perfect if you’ve got heavy vehicles or high traffic. The downside? It’s not the prettiest option unless you splash out on decorative finishes.
Block paving – A brilliant all-rounder that balances looks and durability. The individual blocks distribute weight effectively and, should any damage occur, you can replace individual blocks rather than redoing the whole driveway. Clever, eh?
Tarmac – Quick to install and relatively budget-friendly. Modern tarmac mixes are much more durable than they once were, but they might not stand up to really heavy vehicles over time. Great for standard family cars though.
Resin bound – The new kid on the block. Looks absolutely stunning but also provides excellent durability when laid on a proper sub-base. It’s permeable too, which helps with drainage (more on that crucial point in a bit).
It’s What’s Underneath That Counts
Here’s where many driveway installations go wrong – skimping on what you can’t see. A proper driveway is a bit like an iceberg – the visible surface is just a fraction of what makes it work.
A proper sub-base typically consists of:
- Excavation – Digging down at least 200-300mm to remove all that soft, unsuitable material
- Geotextile membrane – Stops your sub-base disappearing into the soil below
- MOT Type 1 sub-base – Usually around 150mm of compacted hardcore
- Bedding layer – For block paving and similar surfaces
- Your chosen surface material
Miss any of these steps and you might as well start saving for a replacement driveway now. At L Groundworks, we never cut corners on the foundation work – it’s false economy and we’d rather do the job properly.
Drainage: The Unsung Hero
Poor drainage is the arch-nemesis of a durable driveway. Water that can’t escape will find ways to undermine your driveway’s structure, especially during our lovely British winters when freeze-thaw cycles can wreak havoc.
You’ve got several options here:
- Gradient design – A slight slope (around 1:60) helps water run off naturally
- Channel drains – Those little gutters that collect water at strategic points
- Permeable surfaces – Materials like permeable block paving or resin bound that let water drain through
- Soakaways – Underground structures that collect water and let it seep away gradually
Since 2008, planning regulations have actually required sustainable drainage for new or replacement driveways, so it’s not just good practice – it’s the law.
Regular Maintenance Goes a Long Way
Even the toughest driveway needs a bit of TLC. Think of it as a health check-up:
- Sweep regularly to remove debris and prevent weed growth
- Tackle oil spills promptly (they can degrade certain surfaces)
- Power wash once or twice a year (but be careful with the pressure on block paving)
- Re-sand joints in block paving when needed
- Fill cracks in concrete or tarmac before they expand
A little effort every few months can add years to your driveway’s lifespan. It’s like flossing your teeth – a bit tedious, but much cheaper than dealing with the alternative!
Professional Installation Makes All the Difference
Here’s the honest truth – while DIY projects can be rewarding, driveways really benefit from professional installation. The equipment, expertise and experience needed to properly compact layers, achieve the right falls for drainage, and ensure a finish that lasts for decades is significant.
At L Groundworks, we’ve installed driveways across the region that still look fantastic years later. Our team doesn’t just lay a surface – we engineer a complete system designed to handle whatever traffic you throw at it.
